Teaching programmes

The Centre for Teaching and Learning offers teaching programmes at a range of levels for DPhil students, academics and professional services staff across the collegiate University.

As well as the accredited teaching programmes - Advancing Teaching and Learning (ATL) and the Teaching Recognition Scheme (TRS) - those new to teaching can also enrol on a short Preparing for Teaching and Learning at Oxford (PLTO) course, which is delivered within Divisions.

Preparation for Learning and Teaching at Oxford course

The Preparation for Learning and Teaching at Oxford (PLTO) course is an introduction to teaching at Oxford.

The course is tailored to local requirements and run by Departments, Faculties and Divisions. The course is intended for DPhil or postdoctoral researchers who wish to start teaching at Oxford. College staff are welcome to apply.

Advancing Teaching and Learning programme

The Advancing Teaching and Learning (ATL) programme is designed to support DPhil students, postdoctoral and early career researchers, academics new to teaching and professional learning support staff who are currently teaching and who are looking to develop their teaching/learning support practice.

The ATL programme is available in two cohort streams: ‘Sciences’ and ‘Humanities and Social Sciences’ and is accredited by Advance HE, leading to the award of Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Teaching Recognition Scheme

The Teaching Recognition Scheme (TRS) offers structured pathways for staff to apply for recognition for their substantive teaching, learning support or educational leadership.

The TRS offers support for participants to prepare a recognition claim for either Fellow or Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, as appropriate to their higher education roles and responsibilities and is accredited by Advance HE.

What are the benefits of accredited teaching programmes?

Accredited teaching programmes offer participants the opportunity to develop and identify teaching practices that successfully support learners. Engagement with the programmes will enable participants to contextualise their teaching practice within higher education scholarship.

Please note: In 2022-23, the PGCert in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education will not be offered. You can gain recognition as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy through the TRS Fellowship Pathway.
